North Carolina - here I come!

I am wildly excited to have been invited by the ever gracious and wonderful Molly Weston to participate in a book tour with two extraordinary authors: Hank Phillippi Ryan and Karen E. Olson. Karen's Tattoo Shop Mystery, PRETTY IN INK (what a cool concept) comes out March 2nd! That's Tuesday! Hank, as I'm sure you know, is an Emmy and Agatha Award winner and her novel AIR TIME has just been nominated for an Agatha this year!

So, I'm headed to North Carolina Thursday (leaving the family to fend for themselves - yikes!) to join these lovely ladies for a three-day whirlwind tour around Raleigh. If you're in North Carolina, I would love to meet you - please visit Booktour.com for details of our "Triple Threat" tour stops.

Sunday - as Hank and Karen head back to the airport, I'll be picking up a rental car and driving out to Asheville, NC for a stay at The Biltmore Estate. This is research for the new Manor of Murder series and I'm thrilled. I'm staying on the property at the Inn at Biltmore, and I can't wait.

I feel terrible

Today... just today mind you, I had to turn down two friends who asked me to read and critique their manuscripts. I'd already turned down several other people in the past couple of months. But the hits just keep on coming... Another friend had asked me to blurb his book and I just don't think I can do it. He just emailed a few minutes ago asking if I'd had time to read his manuscript yet. I haven't.

I feel terrible. I want to help - so much - but time has this nasty habit of slipping away. Another friend asked me to read his manuscript for critique - about a year ago - and I told him I couldn't but that I'd go over the first three chapters when the book was finished. Well, he got the chapters to me a week or so ago but I have no idea when I'll get a chance to read. Critiquing takes a lot more concentration than reading for blurb. When I agreed, I thought -- three chapters will be easy. But I'm finding I'm wiped out by the end of the day and can't put my mind to it.

This year is already chock full of events and this was the year I'd planned to take it slow. Hasn't worked out that way. I'm not complaining -- I really prefer to be busy -- but my family and my writing have to take precedence. Otherwise I'm in deep trouble. It seems once I get my writing quota done for the day, and after I take care of kid-related or husband-related tasks, there's just no downtime.

If you're reading this, and you ever ask me for a blurb or for a critique and I beg off, please know that in my heart I really want to help. I just can't find the time anymore.

Independent Bookstores

Are you looking for a local independent bookseller? If so, where do you live?

I'm posting this list for readers' convenience. And I plan to refer to it in an upcoming newsletter. In the meantime, if you are an independent bookseller, or know of a great one... please contact me at Julie Hyzy (at) gmail (dot) com. No spaces. I'll add bookstore information as it becomes available in future posts. This is a work in progress... but you gotta start somewhere, right? ;-)

Valentine's Day approaches..

If you have a minute, you may want to check out Mystery Lovers' Kitchen today. Today's Tuesday, so that means I'm blogging there, and the recipe I'm sharing is one of my all time favorites - Ice Cream Cake. Sweet, and fun, it's also easily modified for any celebration.

I'm keeping this short because I'm in the midst of copyedits for GRACE UNDER PRESSURE and they're due tomorrow!! Yikes!

Good Shepherd Reunion

Saturday was wonderful!! Thanks to Facebook, I reconnected with my Good Shepherd grammar school friends I hadn't seen or talked with in :::cough, cough::: years!

Ray Bernard, Al Krizka, Danny McNamara, Billy Zbroskewich and I met up at Home Run Inn Pizza on Archer and Meade in Chicago. Now, that's pretty cool, because another friend on Facebook, Michael Meade, couldn't be there. He's in Colorado, and I guess the ride in would have been a little too long ;-)

Before I go any further, let me just take a moment to talk about Home Run Inn Pizza. We all grew up very close to the original location on 31st Street. In fact, I lived less than two blocks away directly on 31st. This was the pizza we were all raised on and, I hereby claim that Home Run Inn Pizza is the BEST pizza in Chicago. No contest. In my opinion, it's got the only crust worth eating. I usually stick with "middles" when sharing pizza and if I get stuck with an end, I eat around the crust and leave it on my plate. With HRI, I nab the crusts first and enjoy every bite. They are the best. Truly, truly.

Anyway, we met at 12:30 (I was about 10 minutes late) and we sat around talking and laughing and enjoying our reminiscing until 4:00. Had the most wonderful time.

Don't we look like we're having fun? That's Al in the back. Then Danny, me, Billy, and Ray.

Nobody has changed a bit. I would recognize these handsome fellows anywhere. It's been way too long since we had this chance to goof around (and make fun of our teachers, natch!), and I hope we get together again soon, before it's another :::cough, cough::: years!

Thanks, guys, for a fabulous afternoon!
Hugs,
Julie

Hyzy in Hitchcock!

A Hyzy finally made it into Hitchcock!

My daughter, Robyn, has an illustration in the April 2010 issue of Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. It's out now (and, of course, I just picked up a bunch of copies!). Here's a look at the cover:

Robyn's illustration is on page 75. And information about AHMM is here.

And you can see lots more of her wonderful artwork on her website!

(Can you tell I'm a proud Mom?)
